Photographer in Madrid: how a photo session works, what to shoot and when 📸

I'm LuCa Ayres, a photographer based in Madrid for over six years, and this is the question I hear most from travelers planning their trip: "But what is there to photograph in Madrid?" The short answer is: almost everything. The long answer is this post. If you want a photo session in Madrid that actually looks like you — not a generic postcard shot — stick with me and I'll walk you through how it works.

Photographer in Madrid: why the city is so versatile

Unlike other European capitals, Madrid doesn't have one single photo spot. Paris has the Eiffel Tower, Rome has the Colosseum, and everyone walks away with the same picture. Madrid is different: it fits several styles at once, and the beauty of a session is finding the part of the city that fits you.

Want something iconic and grand? We head to the Royal Palace. Green and peaceful? Retiro Park. The urban buzz of a big city? Gran Vía. Something more authentic and full of character? The little streets and taverns of Barrio de las Letras. In a single city, completely different sessions are possible — and you choose the tone.

Photographer's tip: when someone wants that unmistakable "symbol of Madrid" look, I take them to the Royal Palace. Right next to it are the Almudena Cathedral and the palace gardens — one location, but several different backdrops within a few steps. It delivers a lot.

The places I love taking you

Every corner of Madrid tells a different story in a photo:

• Royal Palace + Almudena Cathedral — the city's calling card, elegant and full of framing options.

• San Miguel Market — life, color and movement, great for more candid shots.

• Retiro Park — when you want nature, soft light filtering through the trees, and a lighter mood.

• Gran Vía up to the Cibeles Fountain — urban Madrid, grand architecture, a spot I personally love to shoot.

• Barrio de las Letras, Salamanca and Malasaña — the less obvious corners, with taverns and small streets only someone who lives here really knows. That's where the most unique photos happen.

Can we build a route? It depends on your time

There's no fixed formula — the session adapts to your plan. If you're short on time, we do something quick and focused in one spot. If you want to dive into the city, we build an immersion plan: we walk through Madrid discovering details, blending the spirit of the city with who you are, to create truly unique photos. A session can run anywhere from 30 minutes (very focused) to a full 4-hour immersion.

My style leans spontaneous — I love capturing the natural moment. But if you're into something more editorial or fashion-driven, I do posed work too. I spent nearly a year photographing on a cruise ship traveling the world, and that's where I learned posing techniques that shape the image without it ever looking forced.

What truly makes the difference, though, comes from before photography: I trained in theater. Connecting with people, directing them, and making them comfortable is my strength. It's what my clients mention most — that they felt calm, relaxed, and at ease in front of the camera. And that's exactly where a great photo happens.

And here's something that makes a real difference for English-speaking travelers: I spent nearly a year working on a British cruise ship, in English, day in and day out. So I'm fully fluent and completely comfortable directing a shoot in English — guiding you, cracking a joke, putting you at ease — with no language barrier at all. In a foreign city, that easy communication changes the whole feel of your photos.

Photographer's tip: you don't need to "know how to pose." That's my job. Yours is just to show up and trust the process.

And the best time to shoot in Madrid?

It depends on the month. The seasons here are very distinct: in winter the sun rises late and sets early, so the window of good light is very different from summer. That's why I set the session time according to when you're visiting — to always catch the most beautiful light. When you reach out, I sort that out with you.

How many photos do you get?

It varies with the type of session. On average I take about 80 shots every 30 minutes, so a session can range from around 80 up to 500 captured images. From that total, you choose how many final photos I edit and deliver with full care.
