Fall Photos in Madrid: The Best Spots and Times of Day 🍂
I'm LuCa Ayres, a Madrid-based photographer with more than seven years living in this city, and here's something worth knowing: for many people, fall in Madrid is the most beautiful season for photos. The city fills with golden and amber tones, the light stays low and warm all day long, and the harsh summer heat finally eases off. If you're planning a trip between October and November, this post is for you. I've put together my favorite spots and the right times of day to capture Madrid's fall in your photos.
When fall really arrives
A tip that saves disappointment: peak golden foliage in Madrid usually lands from mid-October to late November. Early October is still quite green, and by December many trees have already dropped their leaves. If your travel dates are flexible, the second half of November is almost always the sweet spot. Photographer's tip: fall also changes the light. The sun sits lower in the sky, so that sought-after “golden hour” lasts longer and arrives earlier, around 5:30–6:00 p.m. You can have a gorgeous session without waiting until late.
Parque de El Capricho: the hidden gem
This is my favorite fall spot, and hardly any tourists know it. El Capricho is a historic garden with lakes, bridges, and centuries-old trees that turn stunning in November. One important detail: it opens only on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, so build it into your itinerary ahead of time.
Photographer's tip: arrive right at opening, in the morning. The light filtering through the trees is soft and the park is still empty, which makes for clean portraits with no crowds in the background.
The golden Retiro
Retiro Park is a classic year-round, but in fall it transforms. The tree-lined avenues become golden tunnels, and the area around the lake and the Palacio de Cristal takes on a storybook feel. It's perfect for couple, family, and solo sessions, with plenty of different backdrops just steps apart. If it's your first time, take a look at how a photo session with me works in Madrid.
Photographer's tip: look for the ground carpeted in leaves for that shot from above, tossing the leaves into the air. With kids it's guaranteed fun, and it brings out the most natural laughter.
Parque del Oeste and the Temple of Debod
Just below the Temple of Debod, Parque del Oeste is one of my fall surprises: less crowded than Retiro, with foliage that shifts color beautifully. And of course, sunset behind the Temple of Debod remains one of the most photogenic in the city; against a fall sky, it's simply breathtaking.
Photographer's tip: combine the two in the same evening. We start in the green of the park with soft light and finish on the Debod esplanade right as the sun goes down. Two moods in a single session.
What to wear for fall photos
As a photographer, I always advise on outfits before the session, and in fall it makes a real difference. Earth tones (caramel, burgundy, mustard, olive, beige) echo the leaves and create that harmonious, magazine-like image. A good coat, a light scarf, some boots: beyond keeping you warm, they add layers and movement to the photos.
Photographer's tip: avoid loud prints or large logos. Solid colors in autumn tones keep the focus on you and the scenery, and they'll age far better when you look back at these photos ten years from now.
